Revenge Porn

Romans 1:30 talks about people who “invent new ways of sinning.”  In this high-tech generation, we don’t have to look very far to see examples.

With so many people walking around with cameras in their pockets and purses, it’s no surprise that the “selfie” would be popular.  And with so many of those people being hedonists, it’s no surprise that the nude selfie would become the new way to flirt.

(Before I go on, let me just say that I’ve never gotten the whole selfie thing.  I’m sorry, but people who are constantly taking photos of themselves seem a little weird to me.  An occasional shot with your spouse or your child on a special occasion is one thing, but people whose Facebook pages are filled with selfies?  Ew.)

Anyway, the nude selfie has given rise to a new kind of evil…revenge porn.  Ah yes, ladies and gentlemen, it was only a matter of time.  Girl takes nude selfies and sends them to her boyfriend.  Boyfriend is a jerk, so girlfriend eventually dumps him.  Dumped boyfriend is mad, so to get revenge he posts ex-girlfriend’s nude selfies all over the Internet.  Right here in Florida, one 18-year-old girl’s ex-boyfriend posted her nude pictures on 200 different web sites along with her address and phone number.*

So now state legislatures have come up with the term “revenge porn” and are writing laws to try to stop it.

I try to be understanding and sympathetic.  I really do.  But I’m having a terrible time working up sympathy for people who get burned by revenge porn in the same way that I would have a hard time feeling sorry for someone who thought it would be fun to jump off a house and ended up breaking an ankle.  Shouldn’t some dangers be obvious?

Here’s a novel idea: don’t take nude pictures of yourself.

Here’s another one: don’t date  someone who wants you to take nude pictures of yourself.

The apostle Paul said, “You will always harvest what you plant.” (Galatians 6:7)  Translation: “Your nude selfies will always come back to haunt you.”

This is not rocket science, people.

    so well said.

I wish every teen could read this because everyone of them think
it could not happen to them. Well it is happening.

  2. Dave Robinson says:

I have a relative with over 600 ‘selfie’ pictures on their FB site who also uses pretty bad language in her posts. She has a young daughter who will eventually see and read it all. Where are we headed?

  3. Marg says:

It took me a awhile to even open this one Mark. Was not sure where you were headed with it. Too many kids today think it will never happen to me of course when I say kids the ages could very well vary.
