There’s an interesting item in the news today. TMZ has gotten its hands on some court documents that reveal how much Mariah Carey spends to get ready for a photo shoot. I hope you’re sitting down.
Stylist — $65,391
Hair stylist — $9,600
Makeup artist — $7,200
Manicurist — $2,400
I’m not trying to be mean or insulting to Mariah, but have you seen her lately? She looks nothing like she did when she first broke into the entertainment business. She has become a caricature of herself, a cartoon-like diva deluxe, complete with expensive furs and freakish physical enhancements. A cynical person might wonder if Mariah’s obvious obsession with her appearance is a desperate attempt to stay relevant in an industry that always has and always will favor the young.
I wonder when Mariah will realize she’s fighting a losing battle. Her team of stylists and makeup artists and plastic surgeons may be good, but they’re not good enough to defeat time. I shudder to think what Mariah is going to look like as an 80-year-old woman.
Speaking of losing battles, are you fighting one?
Are you trying to conquer your unhappiness by buying things?
Are you trying to eat away your stress?
Are you trying to please a boss that is never satisfied?
Are you trying to hang onto a boyfriend that has a roving eye?
Are you trying to help a troubled person who doesn’t want to change?
Are you trying to make a living off of a talent you don’t possess?
Are you trying to fit in with people who have different core values?
Let’s face it, some situations are just hopeless. One of the great keys to happiness in life is recognizing when you’ve come to one. If you fail to recognize it, desperation will soon have you grasping at whatever silly option looks like it might offer a sliver of hope. In the end, you’ll become a caricature of your true self, having sold out the real you to a possibility that never even existed.
Be honest. Is it time for you to bring home your troops and give up that battle that you know deep down you will never win?
